Cardozo School of Law in October 1989. From the outset he placed himself and his circumstances into the text. I am using him to do the same because of my identification with his personal/theoretical concern. His involvement with the question of understanding is not any new. In that article, the act of using a language that is not his own and the concept of translation from one language to the other are central to his discussion of justice. In this context, the problem of understanding seems to be twofold. On the one hand, “if, at least, I want to make myself understood, it is necessary that I speak your language, I must”(p. 4). On the other hand, there is the problem of the “always imperfect compromise between two idioms” (P.5).
